Here at Reframing Disability, we want every family to feel empowered to walk their own beautiful path. And sometimes, that means getting a little guidance from those who’ve walked there before.

Our Peer Connect program unites parents and caregivers just starting out on their journey with those further along the way. It’s an entirely free service delivered by our team of knowledgeable Peer Support Specialists, who are also caregivers of children with disability, delay, or medical need. Just like you.

Our Peer Support Specialists are trained in best practice, evidence-based approaches to supporting children with disability. But it’s their personal experience that provides an extra level of know-how not always available to other professionals.

Conducted virtually or by phone, a session with a Peer Support Specialist can help you to better navigate the health, childcare and school systems, access available supports, link up with other community members, or simply talk through that worry that kept you up last night.

They’ll direct you to the right resources and help you find the tools that will empower you to parent from a place of confidence and capacity.

Trust us, a little guidance from another caregiver on a similar journey – one who can offer unbiased information, encouragement and hope – can change everything. Whether you’re just starting out or you’re at a crossroads, Peer Connect can help you find the strength, resilience and agency to create the life you want your family to live.

Frequently Asked Questions

Am I eligible for Peer Connect?

The Peer Connect program is for parents and caregivers of children with disability, developmental delays, or medical needs, including children with a rare or no diagnosis.

Currently, this service covers families located in New South Wales only. If you’re based in another state, don’t hesitate to get in touch with us via the contact form above, and we can recommend a service in your state.

What happens in a Peer Connect session?

The Peer Support Specialist will contact you at your arranged time. They will introduce themselves and the objective of the session. They will ask a series of questions to help determine the types of information and support that could help your child and family. These sessions are casual and conversational, and you don’t have to share anything you’re not comfortable with. Following the session, you will receive an email with a summary of the discussion and links to trusted and reliable resources.

How long is the session?

The session generally takes around 1 hour.

Is there a cost to the session?

No. Peer Connect is a free service.

Is it a confidential service?

Yes, the conversation is completely confidential. You will receive our Privacy Policy when we schedule the session.

What is a Peer Support Specialist?

A peer support specialist has lived experience parenting a child with disability, developmental delay or medical needs. They are trained to support other families and understand evidence-based and best practice approaches. Their personal experience provides Peer Support Specialists with expertise not always available to other professionals.

A peer support specialist is not a counsellor, therapist or caseworker and cannot provide these supports, but can point you in the right direction to accessing these services.

Will I be given recommendations for local services?

We cannot recommend specific local services, healthcare professionals, sporting clubs etc. But we will provide you with the information and support to locate these yourself.

Daytime is challenging to speak. Do you offer sessions outside business hours?

Yes, we do. We are fortunate that the Peer Connect team works flexible hours, which means they are often available for evening sessions. You will be asked to indicate your preferred time when we get in touch to schedule your session.

Can the support be offered in a language other than English?

Yes, we can support you using an Interpreter service. Please advise us in your registration form, and we will be in touch with you to organise.
